Things To Do

This is Montana!

Big Fish

Nestled in the Clark Fork River valley, small-town Alberton is surrounded by big sky views of the Bitterroot Mountains. Deer, elk, moose and bear are our neighbors. Barely a half mile away, the Clark Fork River is handy for fishing and western Montanaâ??s best whitewater rafting.

If you are at all able to bicycle you should not miss the new Hiawatha Bike Trail, an hour west, near Wallace, Idaho. Bring your own bike or rent one there, to ride along the abandoned railroad bed, through tunnels and over mountain trestles with breathtaking views.

How about golf, hiking, horseback riding or hunting?
We can help you arrange your adventures.

For history buffs, we have the Alberton Railroad Museum right here in town, housed in authentic Milwaukee Road cars. Just down the road is the Nine-Mile Ranger Station and Museum, where you can learn all about the early days of rangering and mule packing in the backcountry, and 30 minutes away is the Historical Museum at Fort Missoula with regularly changing exhibits.

Montana Valley Book StoreJust down the street from the Ghost Rails Inn is the Montana Valley Bookstore, a funky and intriguing collection of over 150,000 used book, plus a couple of the biggest house cats you'll ever see. A little further down is The Antique Depot, a treasure trove of antiques, collectibles, art and frames, housed in a restored depot brought over from nearby Frenchtown.

Or walk over to Alberton's little historic museum and our Railroad Museum, housed in authentic Milwaukee Railroad cars.

The 3rd Saturday of July the town of Alberton celebrates our proud railroad heritage on Railroad Day. A pancake breakfast kicks off a day of festivities including a parade, live music, kid games, and vendors, winding up with a night of fireworks down at the river.

The Railroad's gone but the spirit lives on!
